Frida Kahlo, plus surprisingly complacent cat. No Diego because husband in third year rotations and therefore mostly non-existent (but who really wants to play Diego to Frida, anyhow?). Dress and shawl from costume closet, earrings from my mum, and flowers of a last-minute-midnight making.
I found this tutorial (above others) to be the most useful when it came to hairstyle — I wish I had taken a picture of the end result sans flower crown; it looked historical, authentic, and as if my hair-to-the-collar-bone could be hair-past-my-waist. (Also, perpetual note to self: just drag your darn actual camera around, okay?) My students were horrified by the monobrow, that I had done such a thing with actual purpose. I am more horrified by Beyoncé's apparently executive decision to eschew the famous feature altogether, which I think if we're going to be honest here would in all reality have offended Ms Kahlo herself? Like, that's the point? Why even bother? Can we talk about this?
Last year's ship-and-captain here.
